The University pays the passages of wives and
children of members of its staff. As the residential
quarters in the University estate are not suitable for
a married man, the Reader, if a married man, and
especially if a married man with children, might find
it advisable to come out in the first instance alone.
The fact that his wife and children were not travelling
with him would not, on this occasion make any difference.
But a member of the staff must understand as regards
going home on leave, that the University will provide
passages only for a wife and family when the leave is
to actually due the Reader concerned and he has decided to
avail himself of it.
11.
The present arrangement is that every member of
the University staff who is recruited abroad is entitled
to nine months leave with assisted passages after every
four-and-a-half years of continuous University service.

The summer climate is hot and "sticky" but it is not
unhealthy and there are admirable facilities for bathing
There is no marked prevalence of any tropical
disease. The climate is suitable for children under 8,
after which health and education are a problem.

etc.
to the fluctiation of the dollar it is impossible to say
anything very definite about the cost of living except
that the cost has not yet risen in proportion to the
dollar's fall.
There is not as yet any direct taxation.
